Sandstone
Sandstone ranges from buff and honey to grey and lilac. Riven sandstone has a textured, natural face that suits older homes and cottage gardens. Sawn sandstone has a smooth face and crisp edges for a cleaner look. Each delivery varies, so we lay slabs out first to balance the colours.
Limestone
Limestone tends to be more uniform, in blue-grey, black or soft buff. It suits both period and modern houses and looks especially good sawn and laid in a regular pattern.
How we lay it
Natural stone is laid on a compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed, not on spots of mortar, which can leave hollows that rock and crack. Some stones are primed on the back to help them bond. Joints are filled with a jointing compound or mortar to suit the stone.
Looking after it
Stone weathers and changes over time, which is part of its appeal. A gentle brush and occasional wash keeps it looking good. Sealing is optional and depends on the stone.
